Context & Scale

Faros Omogenias (Φάρος Ομογένειας) was founded by Dimitri Cavouras and colleagues as an independent community media initiative reporting cultural, civic, and historical news for the Hellenic diaspora in Egypt and abroad. The initiative required a digital news magazine capable of dual-language publishing in Greek and English. Alex Seif was independently contracted to design and implement the news portal on WordPress, establishing a reliable editorial platform and beginning a long-standing technical partnership that continues to this day.

Architectural Decisions

  • ->Bilingual Content Architecture: Structured dual-language content handling for Greek and English using WordPress multi-taxonomy and translation mappings, ensuring independent permalinks and cleanly separated editorial streams.
  • ->Multilingual Typographic Hierarchy: Implemented web font loading and UTF-8 encoding specifically calibrated for Greek characters, ensuring proper rendering across desktop and mobile devices without font substitution artifacts.
  • ->Categorized News Layout: Engineered an editorial magazine grid supporting headline banners, featured cultural articles, opinion columns, and embedded photo galleries.

Engineering Execution

  • ->Frontend: Responsive HTML5 and CSS3 templates tailored for high readability and fast asset loading on mobile devices over cellular connections.
  • ->CMS & Backend: Custom WordPress theme built in PHP, configuring editorial user roles, bilingual categorization, and automated thumbnail generation.
  • ->Data Layer & Hosting: Deployed on a Linux host with MySQL, configuring browser caching headers, Gzip compression, and automated database backups.
