Context & Scale

The Greek Community of Cairo (Ελληνική Κοινότητα Καΐρου / EKK), founded in 1904, is one of the most prominent historic Hellenic diaspora institutions in the Mediterranean. In 2018, the community lacked a centralized digital presence to publish institutional governance announcements, document century-old cultural archives, coordinate local civic events, and communicate with members in Egypt and abroad. Alex Seif was contracted as Lead Full-Stack Developer and Technical Consultant to architect and launch the community's official web portal and diaspora newsletter pipeline.

Architectural Decisions

  • ->Institutional Archive & Taxonomy Design: Structured hierarchical WordPress taxonomies and custom post formats to organize historical documentation, community school programs, philanthropic initiatives, and chronological civic notices.
  • ->Diaspora Newsletter Pipeline: Engineered an integrated digital newsletter subscription and broadcast mechanism, allowing editorial staff to distribute announcements and cultural updates directly to thousands of diaspora subscribers worldwide.
  • ->Low-Maintenance Software Architecture: Configured a resilient, low-overhead WordPress deployment on PHP 7.4 and MySQL designed to minimize administrative dependencies and withstand sustained public traffic without ongoing architectural intervention.

Engineering Execution

  • ->Frontend: Built responsive HTML5 and CSS3 templates with multilingual character support, ensuring clear typography for Greek, Arabic, and English readers across desktop and mobile devices.
  • ->Backend & CMS: Custom WordPress configuration in PHP 7.4 with role-based access permissions, enabling administrative staff to manage event calendars, post obituaries and community announcements, and curate photo galleries independently.
  • ->Hosting & Database Optimization: Deployed on Linux with Apache and MySQL, configuring database indexes, Gzip compression, and browser caching headers for rapid asset delivery.
